Haha...well, it's Final Fantasy geekery, since "echo screen" is one of the many potions you can find in the game. Echo screen basically makes anything it's thrown on "STFU", which is why you use it on spell-casting monsters and enemies. If you "S" them "TFU", they can't cast spells on you!
