Bad dog! No biscuit!

You see this innocent-looking pup right here? Don't let him fool you. My dog...is a criminal. A regular teenage delinquent. I'm very cross with him right now.

Kiba's been attending puppy day care since he was about two months old. Yes, I know it's ridiculous and a disgusting display of slavish dog-devotion, and yes there are starving children in third-world countries who are treated worse than my dog, and yes he's a spoiled brat-prince of the dog world... I'm so aware of all this. And yet, I do it, because he's MY brat prince and besides, it's very good to socialize your dog from an early age, to ensure that they get along with other dogs.

OR SO I THOUGHT!

About two months ago, while at daycare, Kiba was attacked by a wheaten-coated terrier. Not a big nasty fight, just a grumpy nip that turned into a heated exchange. Keebs had a limp, the other dog had a cut lip...the owner of the daycare (who is a heck of a trainer and a specialist in dog behavior) said she couldn't be sure because she missed the exchange (and it happened so fast) but she thought the blame lay with the terrier. Kiba's been such a good boy, and generally loves all dogs, so we decided he could continue attending day care (bad actors get banned from Puppy Daycare, them's the rules).

So, the owner and I have made an effort to separate Kiba and Memphis (the terrier), because sometimes bad blood develops and dogs really DO develop enmity for rivals, as well as friendships. Keebs apparently was disenchanted with Memphis for the rest of the day, after that fight, and kept trying to go after him (revenge!) so it's obvious he harbors a grudge.

So I figure, we'll just avoid Memphis. Problem solved.

Today I dropped my Keebs off at day care so I could get my hair done. Yeah, I could have left him at home, but he LOVES day care, it's a treat for him, so I figgured "He'll have a good time while I'm busy". What a good dogmom!

But ~then~, not five minutes after I get home, I get a call. Kiba instigated a dog fight...I need to pick him up ASAP.

:-0

So, I pick up my dog. Here's the thing...he's very smart. The owner of the day care ~loves~ him but it seems he has actually developed an aversion to ALL wheaten-coated terriers. How freaky is that? She said she's only seen one other dog develop a breed-sensitivity. It's apparently a pretty rare thing. Kiba flew at a wheaten-coated terrier today who was NOT Memphis and was doing nothing to provoke an attack, and he bit him hard on the nose. That's a trick doggies use to show dominance. Keebs has decided that all Wheatens are potentially enemies, and is going to launch pre-emptive strikes against any Wheaten he sees...

Crap! :-(

So now, he's banned from Doggy Day Care forever. And I have to be on the lookout for wheaten-coated terriers, because Kiba is apparently pissed at the entire breed. Everyone was bummed, he's been going to that place for almost a year and a half, now, and he's a big favorite there. He was considered such a good and gentle player that they used to use him to "bring out" dogs that were shy. And now he's banned. !!!

Funny thing is, I'm so ~upset~!! I feel almost like a mom who gets a phone call from school..."Your son was caught beating up another kid in the playground today...please come remove him from this facility and don't bring him back..." Waah!

And he's been the nicest, friendliest dog I've ever had. Damn!

WAH. That sucks so hard. Damn smarts being a double edged sword.

But he *is* a very, very pretty boy nonetheless, and I bet you'll find another fun place for him to socialize in, and perhaps get over his terrier aversion :3

Well, at least he loves people...that's most important. Dog aggression I can handle (most dogs have a pretty high level of aggression towards other dogs...hold over from when they were used to protect flocks of sheep from wild canids), but aggression towards people would be so awful. :-(

He's very gentle and great with kids though. I guess I'm just so surprised that ONE bad incident can turn him against JUST that breed. S'freaky.

I'm sorry, that really blows. *hug* Perhaps there might be some way to break him of that? That might be time-consuming, tho... :(

The trainer said aggression conditioning IS a possibility, but it's expensive and never really reliable (he'd be okay with wheatens, maybe, until an aggressive one snarled at him and then he'd probably overreact), so best just to avoid that breed.

I guess I'm lucky that it was Wheatens that he's decided to hate, and not something really popular like Goldens or Labs ('cause then he'd be launching himself at every other dog!). In a way, it's funny, because I'm super good at recognizing rare breeds (I'm a bit of a dog fanatic) and now, so is my pup!

At least he's still a super-good people dog. :::shrugs:::

Ya know, something similar like that happened with my dog Blossie. Only it involved chickens...

When she was a puppy, we had a stupid rooster that used to run around our porch like he was the lord of the manor. Well her dog food dish was also on the porch and when she went to eat-he walked up to her and pecked her on the head as hard as he could. I was standing in the doorway at the time. Before I could intervene, Blosse (who was a little fluff ball barely a year old) grabbed the rooster by his throat and dragged him down the porch, through the yard, under a tree, and down a hill. I lost sight of them over the hill, but I did see red feather's fly everywhere. A moment later she comes running up the hill as happy as ever, followed by a very shaken and chewed upon rooster. After that incident she HATED all chickens. Even now she'll still try to chase them. Won't kill them, just run them off.

Haha! Is it wrong for me to find the mental image of Blossie kicking some chicken's ass absolutely hilarious? She reminds me so much of my old Rubydog. Patient as a saint...but only to a point.

Kiba, Blossie, the poultry...

Dear Merimask the Maskmaker: I'm sorry that Kiba is having difficulties with a specific breed and is banned from Daycare. :(

But I agree with the humorous aspect of Blossie vs chickens. I started laughing as soon as I read that. Which gave me an idea...

I'd sure love to have Rumdiculous and Blossie visit me here in Milwaukee at some point, because I have a number of co-workers whom I'd LOVE to dress up in chicken suits and have them introduce themselves to Blossie in an open field in the rolling hills of Wisconsin...
