It's funny, because I was going to relate a little story here today about something that happened last night, regarding myself and my latent temper, & then this morning when I signed on to make the entry I was confronted by a situation online that TOTALLY made me lose my cool.
AOL (which admittedly is the lamest online service provider known to man...but I've been here for 15 years and I can't change) has a "news" feed full of articles that are open for comment. The top article was about Michelle Obama...just an innocuous fluff piece but I love Michelle so I read the whole thing. Then, I got to the comments at the bottom.
There were thousands upon thousands of comments and fully 75% of them were the scariest, most hatefully racist things a person could write. Several users called for acts of violence and made death threats againts the "Monkeys in the white house". The "N" word was used often & several others I haven't seen in a while. Misspellings & the use of all caps only added to the brutality. No one seemed to be interested in stopping them, either...I mean there were thousands of these messages.
So I did a little research and quickly found U.S. Code : Title 18 : Section 871. I copied the usernames & account information of about two dozen of the worst offenders and sent a little e-mail to the secret service. Another e-mail to AOL, to tell them what I'd just done. Then I posted this in the message forum where the haters were in the process of calling for Michelle and her monkey brats to be shot:
Section 871. Threats against President and successors to the Presidency
(a) Whoever knowingly and willfully deposits for conveyance in
the mail or for a delivery from any post office or by any letter
carrier any letter, paper, writing, print, missive, or document
containing any threat to take the life of, to kidnap, or to inflict
bodily harm upon the President of the United States, the
President-elect, the Vice President or other officer next in the
order of succession to the office of President of the United
States, or the Vice President-elect, or knowingly and willfully
otherwise makes any such threat against the President,
President-elect, Vice President or other officer next in the order
of succession to the office of President, or Vice President-elect,
shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five
years, or both.
A note to users (and here I listed the two dozen or so AOL users who'd been making threats in the forum)... your AOL user names and account information has been forwarded to the secret service. Have a nice day.The posts stopped and shortly after that, the entire message board got wiped. Some five minutes later, the entire article was gone.
I'm still monitoring the situation because I'm still really ANGRY. I'm not done sending e-mail yet, either. AOL is getting an earfull from me.
This is not a good way to start the morning...
EDIT...
Nope, at least one son of a bitch is still at it. JSPratts0323 on AOL if anyone gives a hoot. I'm TOSing the stupid bastard right now.
EDIT YET AGAIN: Well I feel MUCH better & also, vindicated. This is an e-mail from the nice lady at theSecret Service:
"I forwarded the link to our Internet Threat desk. They will look at it also and work with AOL on identifying any of the entities that would be in violation of USC.(if any subpoenas or court orders need to be generated for privacy rules) Thank you for your information, you are not being a pest."
So yay for that! Here is a site for everyone who hates these threats against the president as much as I do:
Secret Service Offices. I called my local office & spoke to a person directly, & she handled the whole thing & took my e-mails and links.
DO speak up when you see this crap. I will from now on. If anything ever happens to the Obama family, at least I have done my best. I think if more people report this crap when they see it, it'll make the haters think twice. If the haters can't spew their rhetoric publically, I think it'll cut down the overall level of animosity. Cowards are braver in a mob, so I think it's folly to let these few control the message boards.
