My new Trek 7500... *gasp* It's so red! And fast! And infused with awesomeness!
It's a little daunting because the gears are snappier and crankier than my old bike. Also for some perverse reason there are no numbers...! Just two little funky windows above the gear shifts, each about as big as my thumbnail that has a red meter which clicks incongruously left or right...it's a little like learning what Celsius really means. You can understand the conversion, but you don't know what 12 degrees celsius really is until you experience it. That's how my new bike is; you don't know what the window half red on the right and 1/4 red on the left really means until you're zipping along the trail thinking "...I can't possibly be making this thing go this fast with just my legs , can I?"
What's even cooler is the gear shifts...they're triggers! So when I want to go faster, instead of cranking the grip (like I did with my old bike) I get to pull a trigger. It makes speeding up seem like a game. I even find myself whispering "pew pew!" under my breath as I shift up (I'm a total freak).
It feels like a contraption rather than a bike. It feels like a speed machine.
It's going to take some getting used to. Also, I have to find some gear ratio that's at least somewhat comparable to my old bike, because I was leaving Charlotte in the dust yesterday on our inaugural ride (and what's the point of going for a bike ride with the kid if I'm just going to blow her away?).
Anyway, life is red and zippy and has triggers that shoot fleet into your feet. What could be better?
