Huh. The Winter of 2006 shall go down in local history as the Winter that Wasn't. What a freaky weather pattern. It is 60 degrees outside...60! At 2 in the morning. I just can't get over it. I keep stepping outside (in my tee-shirt!) and taking deep breaths of warm almost-summer-evening air and wondering what the heck is up. It's all supposed to come crashing to an end soon though. Thunderstorms and 50 to 70 mph winds (eeep!)and lake snow by tomorrow night.
So I'm really hoping we don't lose power 'cause that'd really suck. Especially since our sump runs off the house current and if the whole thing shuts down the damn drain tiles will cause my basement to fill up like a swimming pool. :::sigh::: The shit you have to worry about when you own a house...
Tomorrow I get my way-cool recumbent excercise bike (and the crowd goes wild). I'm pretty flipping happy 'bout it.
Not working on much except re-stocking from the last big show. It went very well. Unfortunately now I'm forced to do things I don't want to do...like barrettes. :::pout::: Part of being a successful self-employed artist is knowing what sells, and unfortunately these days things have to be small, inexpensive, and utilitarian to sell out regularly. Sign of the times. Still, I had great mask sales which means I get to make bigger and better and more of them. Which is always a happy thing. :-)
I've had the word "bezoar" stuck in my head. This happens to me all the time; last week's word was "ferrule". This week's word sucks though because it's a disturbing nasty thing. And it's yukky. Bezoar. Look it up. :-P

Words often get lodged in my head. For some reason, with me it's usually strange nouns.

And people wonder why I don't want to move back east. :D
It's always good to know what sells. :D I'm still learning. And seeing if I'm going to shoot myself in the foot in the process. I'm trying out bookmarks at my next con.... My fear is that, even though they are severely cropped images, that people will want those over the prints, which are quite a bit more expensive. ($2 vs. $8...or, if you go big, $20) I've printed up a handful, but I'm back and forth as to whether or not I'll do it. I'd like to start making hairsticks for fun, but SakuraCon won't allow them anyway, so I'm not going to stress on those for a while.
Getting weird works stuck in your head must be an artist thing.... Haven't had one lately (thank god...too stressed I suppose) but been there, done that. XD

Bookmarks are a great idea for you. Greeting card sets would be as well. You could do sets of 4 or sets of 8, no words, just cards (you can buy pre-scored card stock at any computer/office supply chain), include envelopes and sell them in little packages. I've found the secret to doing well at ~any~ kind of event is to diversify as much as possible, and have a range of prices/items. I sell little butterfly pins for 5 to 15 dollars, as well as big art pieces that cost hundreds. Sometimes it's the little stuff that ends up covering your entry fees and hotel costs. It all adds up.
I have an awesome source for packaging and matting supplies (Bags Unlimited) that I get all my print packaging stuff from. The half-size mylar sleeves are self-sealing and would make good bags for the greeting card idea (and you really want to check out the pre-cut mats...they're really nice and less than 50 cents each, depending on what size you need).

The greeting card pack is a good idea! I don't know that I'll have time before SakuraCon, but I've got a couple different cons this season, so I've got time to experiement. Diversity is good... though Anime Cons are so strange...some cons, despite small attendance, you'll sell like crazy...large cons, sometimes just flop. I suppose it depends on the competition, though frankly, I've never seen anyone really try to sell realistic anime. :D I think I'm the only one that crazy...and the only one who can take the hits that come along with it (you'd be amazed how people will bad-mouth your work, thinking you can't hear them...igits.)
