So!  This is absolutely the coolest mask I make.  Medusa.

It's really really difficult to cut out, carve, and shape.  So I don't make them very often (this is the first Medusa I've done in three years).   This one has eleven snakes, shaded from gold to copper over a black base.  I thought green eyes for the snakes would really stand out nicely with all that gold so I used 3mm malachite beads.  Those eyes are a PAIN in the ass to sew in.  I sew them onto a small scrap of suede, cement the suede into each head after I position the eyes in the sockets, and then cement another piece of black suede under the chin, to hide all the sewing work.  ELEVEN TIMES!  Auuugh.  But, it's worth it because this mask really rocks (in my not-so-humble opinion) and is a total show-stopper.

You can see the heads just a bit more clearly from this angle.   That's all one piece of leather, by the way.

I did a ~second~ Medusa (eh, it keeps me busy) but the picture didn't load correctly so I'll post that another time.

Also, I had the best conversation with [profile] rumdiculous today, which unfortunately I failed to save.  Talking points:
1.  Someone really needs to cosplay Naraku, complete with Shard pasties
2.  Where might one tuck a $20, should one wish to tip a strategically sharded naked Naraku?
3.  '80's fantasy movies are mucho fun.  Glitter = magic!
4.  "Legend" is more disturbing than "Labyrinth".  Labyrinth has David Bowie's mesmerizing spandex-clad "area"...but Legend has Tom Cruise in a disturbing chain mail mini dress that shows off his hairless boy-thighs, and that wins.

Thank god for that. I HATEHATEHATE body hair, it SOOOO grosses me out. All men should be utterly bald everywhere but their scalps. Women too of course, but they're already close enough to it to not be downright disgusting.

The mask is very cool, but I hate snakes so it would creep me out to have to touch it, lol. They look like they might actually move, and then I'd scream.

I hear you on the hairy guy issue (though some hair is okay, in my opinion). The "Legend" mini dress thing was disturbing, though, because this movie was waaay early in Tom Cruise's career...and his little boy-thighs looked downright girlish. :-) Eeek!

I have a good friend IRL who has a really bad snake phobia. She can't even pick up the Medusa mask, let alone try it on. When you're wearing it, all the little snakes are swirling in front of your eyes like bangs and she just can't handle it.

That mask is spectacular. AMAZING talent you have.

Re: Legend... OMG you've SEEN that? I thought I was the only person in the world. I laughed my ass off. The whole way through. I'm going to go watch it again now and laugh some more.

Re: Naraku... I don't know, not much room for a twenty with the strategic-shard-setup *I* have in mind...

From: [identity profile] merimask.livejournal.com

Thanks. :-) I like doing the Medusa...but she's a ton of work and she really beats up my hands (so it makes me happy when people drool over her).

Legend...hah! I remember seeing that movie *in the theater*!!! I'm old, my dear. Old. :::totters off to die:::

Holy mother of all that is leather. Pardon me, whilst I kiss your feet. That is just freaking amazing. All that needs said. :D

And yes, I agree with #4. Legened is FAR more disturbing on several levels than Labyrinth.

Yay! I'm glad you like it. :-) That mask absolutely shreds my hands. I actually bled when I did these (out of practice, plus my leather shears need sharpening and I have to cut them out by hand).

Labyrinth actually was what inspired me to make masks. That scene where Sarah is tripping out and she's at a masked ball...I remember seeing that and thinking it'd be cool to make masks like those. Now I do! For a living! Life is weird.

The Mask

Merimask the Maskmaker: that Medusa mask, is in fact, way cool! It rocks! I can only imagine what would happen if you had to make, like, two dozen of them overnight for some demented review type Vegas Medusa song and dance show.

Umm...to keep the Tom Cruise/Legend theme alive...I never saw that movie. Didn't interest me back then, and not now, either. How 'bout this: if you wanted to, could you make me a Tom Cruise Top Gun mask based on the wire rim aviator glasses dear Maverick wore when he felt the need...the need for speed? If I commissioned you to? Could you? Just wondering.

NOT Anonymous, I just didn't head link (or whatever) this post properly,

Re: The Mask

Heya Dave. :-) Thanks, I'm glad you like Medusa. There's no WAY I could do more than a couple at a time...my fingers would be stumps.

Don't see "Legends"...ever. Unless you want to give it the MST3K treatment. It's perfect for that.

O_O!!!!

That mask is beyond awesome... o_O!! I've been meaning to comment on your maskage, but the ones I saw were so far in the past I figured it would be less prudish if I waited and then snuck a comment in one day... Hehehe. ^_^

Someone really needs to cosplay Naraku, complete with Shard pasties

Oh good lawrd, I read that as "complete with shard PANTIES." Which, of course, isn't all that far off, but... *demented face* And no special-effects-laden craptastic movie slapjob they do these days can ever even hold a candle to awesome 80's fantasy movies. ;)

Hee hee! This is so funny...I've actually been lurking in your LJ like a total fangirl. I've wanted to say hello for a long time, because I LOVE your website and your fan art. (so, "hi!")

In fact, I love bartering (I'm an anachronism...if I could trade art for goods and services I would). If you ever want a mask, drop me an e-mail (merimask at aol dot com) and we'll talk. :-) I'd LOVE to do something special and unique for you.

Yeah, '80's fantasy movies are a hoot. I have a pretty impressive collection (not really fantasy, but I watch "Bladerunner" all the time...it remains one of my all time favorite movies).

SO. This mask. I can't stop staring and linking my friends while screeching "GO AND SEE, PEON!"

And HAH, there's no element of that conversation you two had that I don't like XD

From: [identity profile] merimask.livejournal.com

Hee! Thanks. :-) I love/hate doing this mask. It's absolutely *painful* to make. I usually have to take a break from making masks for a few days after I finish cutting, carving and shaping this one because it really does beat my hands up. The worst part is doing all those freaking snake eyes...owie! But yeah, it sure is shiny when it's all finished.

I have the funniest conversations with rumdiculous. XD I don't know why, but we're hilarious online together...we crack ourselves up.

From: [identity profile] moko-moko.livejournal.com

Oof, just reading about the process makes me band-aid my hands in sympathy.

Hah, there's nothing better than having total crack-induced conversations with others! Sometimes, I have no idea what me and Cinnie are talking about, and that's when you know the gettin's good XD

From: [identity profile] rumdiculous.livejournal.com

I'll bet that mask is so impressive in person.... *wants to try it on* I have no phobia of snakes, they're my favorite creatures. Plus I'm a huge fan of Medusa. I love the little snakes, they're so cute! And the green eyes really pop out giving the whole mask a interesting look.

Hm...I know of a few places to stick the twenty but I'm not gonna say. :D

Eek, thinking about Cruise's girl-thighs makes me cringe. He disturbed me more than Tim Curry's character. XD

Btw my friend still hasn't gotten over Labyrinth. We have this fabulous joke about the glitter and Bowie's area-but it's funnier to see it in person. I'll tell you the punch line though, "Want to see some glitter?! POW!" Now combine that with a pelvic thrust...

From: [identity profile] merimask.livejournal.com

"Want to see some glitter?! POW!"

LOL!! Oh wow, I TOTALLY got the visual on that. Too freaking funny.

From: [identity profile] rumdiculous.livejournal.com

We have been over-doing that joke lately. I can't count how many times we'll end up saying that in one day. It's kind of sick. XD
