Okay...I STILL haven't loaded all my Las Vegas pics. I know, I'm lazy and I suck (but mostly I want my husband to talk me through it because I'm terrified I'll make a mistake and lose my pictures, and we just haven't gotten to it yet).
In the meantime, I NEED to tell a story.
My brother planned our entire Vegas trip around "Le Reve", an incredible show by Franco Dragonne. He's the guy who was behind every cool thing that Cirque du Soleil ever did. I feel a special affinity for him, since we were both screwed by Cirque. Thing is, Franco is HUGE and so talented that he writes his own ticket, and has gone on to create this wonderful show for the Wynne casino, "Le Reve" ("The Dream"). Apparently, it's the most amazing thing on the Strip.
John met Franco when he worked on set design for "Le Reve". You might remember the very cool mask that my brother commissioned from me; that was a thank-you gift for Franco. Since then my brother John has been working on a LOT of projects with him (and even went to Belgium for a couple of weeks with him, to work on a project involving Franco and a HUGE pop star that you would plotz if I mentioned), so whenever friends/family come into town Franco floats John some awesome comp tickets for whatever show John wants to dazzle folks with. He took Mom to see Celine Dion (Franco designed her Vegas show), and we were all supposed to see "Le Reve" on Saturday night.
...Except the hydraulic system for the stage broke down. It's an 80 million dollar set, and some acts call for actors/acrobats to be flung at speed 300 feet into the air. Also, it's an elaborate water stage (Franco did that for "O" too, but this one's even more complicated than "O"), and stuff has to rise and sink. The 7:30 show was canceled. We got there at 10 pm to find out that the 10:30 show might be canceled as well.
We waited in the casino, to find out whether the show was on or not. The Wynne hotel and casino is absolutely stunning. Opulence everywhere. The stuff on the walls that looks like textured burgundy wallpaper is actually thousands of yards of gathered silk. In the bathrooms, there are three different kinds of marble on the floor and a fourth on the wall. You can't see a single lightbulb anywhere...the whole place seems to glow with hidden indirect lighting.
Charlotte (who is 13 and too young to be on the casino floor) and I stood in the lobby and watched beautiful people stroll by. We saw a few famous faces. The casino was only a few yards away, and the muted bells and flashing lights and occasional screams of joy had Char mesmerized (myself too, truth be told).
I was leaning against a marble pillar, daydreaming and gazing nowhere, when I noticed a group of very pretty people walking rapidly past us. They were all dressed impeccably. The man at the head of the group turned and said something in French as he went by, and he said it to me. I didn't understand what he said (he spoke rapidly) but he was absolutely charming. Small and neat, bright clever eyes, long silver hair and maybe fifty. The woman on his arm looked like a supermodel. I snapped out of my daydream and looked into his face, and that's when he spun away from his date and dashed over to me. He reached out with one hand and plucked a bright blue spark from my right wrist...it seemed to come from the silver bracelet my Mom gave me a few years ago. Charlotte gasped. I said "...Oh.". He held it up, it blinked and dazzled my eyes, then he made a gesture and it seemed to float away as he cast my spark into the air. He grinned at me and said softly "I win!", then he walked back to his little group of friends, who were smiling at us, and they left.
Charlotte's mouth dropped open and said "Wow. Mom." I had my hand over my mouth. I'd never been so charmed or surprised in my life by a simple gesture.
The show was canceled. It was a disappointment for my brother, who'd tried so hard to give us all a magical evening. Somehow, my evening was magical anyway. "I win." :-)
