Let's start with the cute; a river otter mask.

He snurfles and waddles...you can just tell.   ^_^

It may not be sublime, exactly, but I'm very happy with my second attempt at the "Fighting Bettas" mask.

I think this second color combination is just as popular as the first one.

Karmic philanthropy... )
Hi, hello!  I am fine, friends.  Survived two days of hives and Benadryl (the drugs are the worst of it; they make me so tired & good for nothing) and I can't afford to rest because my masks are ON THE COVER OF ARTVOICE!!!

Yay!

Also, for any of you folks who are reading this in Japan, you can see an article about me in this month's issue of J-Select magazine,  which can be found in the English section of any major bookstore in Tokyo.   For people outside Tokyo,  copies can be ordered online.

More soon, no doubt.  Rose, the photographer who did the cover pics, will be sending me some jpgs of the shoot for promotional purposes.  Artvoice also gave me an interior spread with more pictures and a bio...completely unasked-for (but very much appreciated!).  That's incredibly cool...it's the equivalent of a full page ad!

Currently I'm working on a new otter (it's very cute!) and a second version of the Fighting Bettas mask.  I can't beLIEVE I still have the original sitting in my Etsy shop.    More cool new ideas in the works too...like a golden wolf.

Many thanks to friend Tricia, who sent me a very sweet card just when I needed picking up (you'd think that having Angelina Jolie lips would be a good thing, but no) and [livejournal.com profile] golden_meliades , whose gifts of Skip Beat are also timely & wonderful distractions.

*smooch*  Love you all!

I'm keeping busy, making things this weekend to list on Etsy.   Just finished a brand new koi mask this morning...

It's always fun to make koi things.  I did something different with this mask & carved all the ripples in the water.  It gives the face an interesting texture.

Also, I can share this picture now!  Char took this photo of me, for use in an article appearing in a Japanese magazine (my friend Carol wrote it...I haven't seen it yet but I'm sure it's awesome)...

I think Charlotte did a great job.  The article is appearing this month!   Combined with the Artvoice magazine cover, this is a very busy time for me indeed (locally & internationally).

Taxes & ambitions. )
Back to work.  I have 3 half-finished masks on my desk, knirping for attention.

Oh wow...I love this mask.  It started as a sketch I did in Japan.  I was sitting in the theater watching rehearsals all day & I was bored (hard to imagine that, now!) so I did a little doodle of two fighting fish (bettas) in a cheap sketchpad I had brought with me.   It's been sitting on my desk for months.  I kept looking at it, thinking it had a lot of potential as a mask but just not quite seeing it.

The swan I made over the weekend, with its spray of wing feathers, totally inspired me to give it a try.   It fell out of my head right onto a pattern & became this mask, almost in no time at all.

I'm crazy about it!  It has so much motion and energy.  I should have suspected that all the life and youthful athletic beauty that I was bombarded with while sitting in that Shibuya theater would creep into my art somehow.

Art talk... )

On a serious note; my dear friend [livejournal.com profile] geirny  lost her father last night.  I've known both of them for years (almost 2 decades); he was a wonderful, funny, friendly person full of life and energy.  Everyone who knew him loved him; he touched hundreds of peoples' lives because he was just a likeable, approachable guy who always made you laugh & feel at home.  A real character.  I'm going to miss him.   My heart goes out to geirny & her family.  *hugs*

I'm only slightly sidetracked by video games lately (finished the newest Ratchet & Clank game this weekend already)...somehow I managed to make another swan mask.

It's up in Etsy.

I like it because aside from being a pretty cool swan, it also makes a pretty interestingly-shaped mask.  All the feathers splayed out in a spray...kinda neat.  Made me think of my fish (I have a male crowntail betta with really amazing fins...he looks just like this) and so in a fit of creativity I designed a new fighting fish mask that takes advantage of those frilly fins.  I just pulled it out of the oven this minute in fact...it's going to be great, I can already tell & it's not even painted yet.   I really should have done a second one at the same time because I bet it'll go really quickly in my shop.

New car... )

Between money I've saved & a small loan, it'll be no problem paying for it.  I guess I can forget the trip to Japan I was saving for...this is more important though & Greg really needs this car.  It feels awesome knowing I can afford to do something like this.  And what a great wife am I?   Happy Valentine's day dear...here's your car.  ^__^

Again, today is better.  I am up & down so much lately!  Sleep helps & so do friends.  Thank you for cheering me up yesterday f-list!  I was in a foul foul mood but you all helped & isn't that what friends are for?

Good things listed in bullet point format 'cause I like it like that.

*Ratchet & Clank is still stupid & easy fun.  Shooting stuff & collecting clinky clanky jingly bolts helps a bad mood go 'way every time.  Video games as therapy...what an awesome idea!

* Buying soap & good-smelly stuff online is made of win!  I'll link you if the items turn out to be awesome (I suspect they will).

*Getting good advice from online friends is great.  Being able to give good advice is also great.  It feels like contributing to a greater community spirit; instant online Karma.  If flame wars spread unhappiness, then this is the opposite of that.  There ought to be a word for it.

On a personal note, yesterday I was contacted by a photographer who worked with me YEARS ago, when an article about me & my masks ran in a local newspaper.  Well, she hung on to my card (because, cleverly, I sent her a gift after that article ran & my card was attached to it!)...the same paper (which is VERY widely distributed now) wants to use my masks for a cover photo for their Mardi Gras week issue.   A full page cover photo!!  I'll get credit & a mention inside, with my Etsy shop address.  This could be awesome!  & boom, it just fell out of nowhere.

It's like another reminder of the lesson I learned last year; good things will happen when you reach out with a positive, giving heart.  See?  There it goes again!   It's amazing...
I think I've been working too much, perhaps.  Everything is upsetting me today.

The news is upsetting; the stimulus plan hopes to create five to six million jobs by the end of the year (that's an optimistic estimate) but I just saw on CNN that 600,000 new applications for unemployment were opened last week.  Over half a million people fresh out of work...in one week.  That scares the heck out of me.

The child is upsetting; Char told me yesterday that she thinks I love the dog more than I love her.  I can't tell if she really meant it or she was just trying to hurt me for some reason, but it still stings.  The dog, at least, never tries to make me cry.

Friends are upsetting; I don't know why but my online social connections are all screwy & angsty & sad lately.  This is troubling because I am SO isolated between work & the weather that all my friendships are online.  & everyone is too grumpy to be nice.   Well...not everyone, but you know what I mean.

Winter is upsetting; today was supposed to be a bit warmer than yesterday.  Instead, the cold front has stalled out right over our heads, so we have another day of single digit temps.  I cranked the heat & still I'm freezing.

So.  I'm going on strike.  I did a load of dishes & a load of laundry.  I cleaned the cat box.  I made a few barrettes for my etsy shop...and that will have to be enough, today.  I'm putting on some big warm sweatpants and a big fluffy sweater & I'm going to play video games all day, I've decided.  I haven't played any games at all since I opened my Etsy shop over a year ago (yes truly!  I know in my DevArt profile I mentioned some games 'cause I used to play those all the time, but really I haven't touched any in over a year).  Greg bought me Ratchett & Clank games for our PS3, which is over a year old & I've never used it once.  Today I will remedy that situation.

If anyone wants me I'll be curled up on the couch, playing R&C.

EDIT:  Okay so I entered a contest on Etsy  (art submissions of holiday-themed pieces...I thought my Harlequin Romance masks were perfect for that).  And later I have to hop on & buy some darn Main Showcase spots 'cause they sell out in mere minutes & they only go for sale once every two weeks.  But that will be IT.  *doesn't know how to truly relax*
Oh holy monkey, it's COLD outside today.  I went out to take pictures of two masks I finished last night...

...and I just about froze to death.  My fingers actually stopped working.  It's supposed to get warmer by the weekend, which can't come soon enough.  I'm so sick of winter.

All the news... )
As I said in the previous entry, there has been a lot of curiosity about my mask-making method.  This entry & the last one is a sort of tutorial, illustrating my technique.

Details! Details! )And there you have it, from start to finish.  A weekend's project.  Not including drying time, about 10 hours of work (I am FAST, though, because I know what I'm doing).   A totally fun, totally unique mask.

I hope this was a helpful couple of entries!  If you have any questions regarding products I use (or just any little thing you're curious about),  just ask.  ^_^

So many people have been asking me how I make my masks lately, I thought I'd outline my process.  I took pictures as I built a very complicated mask, so that I could explain, step by step, exactly how I do what I do.

A tutorial, with pictures! )

To be continued...

Sea Otter Mask!!

There is no way to look mysterious or fierce while wearing this mask.  Probably to complete the effect you ought to float on your back & eat your dinner off your tummy.

It's actually a pretty old design I came up with years ago.   Haven't done it in a while because bigger, flashier, fancier designs sell better (see yesterday's dragon), but I don't know...I thought my Etsy shop needed a little range.

Besides, how many people make otter masks??  Probably not many, I bet.  I'm cornering the market on cute & fuzzy, here.

In other news; it just keeps snowing and snowing and snowing...

SO happy with this dragon.  Of all the many versions & color combinations I've done, this one is my favorite.

I inlaid a blue paua shell cabochon in the forehead...just a tiny one but very blue against those gold flames.  I tried to match the vibrant blue of the paua with my own mixture of cobalt & pthalo blue and silver acrylic paint (Liquitex in case you care).  Drybrushed by hand over the black scales...I think it really worked.

It's up in Etsy already.

I'm pretty darn pleased with this one, I have to say.  ^__^

Okay...I managed six uninterrupted hours of sleep (which for me is GREAT, I hardly ever do that) and I'm feeling much better.   Sorry for ranting yesterday.  :-/  I was a grumpy gus to be sure.   Things got resolved to a certain degree; I didn't scream but I did complain enough to be heard (I hope) and also, Charlotte's phone was found at the Rec center.  So yay for small victories.  Bictoly!

I think I better get tested because I have all the signs of being iron deficient again.  *sigh*  No fun at all.

Anyhoo, things are continuing to look up, career-wise.  DeviantArt just posted an article/interview with me!  It's such a very cool interview too, all about the "Tsuru" mask but also about my methods & motivations...really it was a great Q & A.  Go look!!

Another online magazine is doing a feature, too (I just got their letter of interest today...see how PR pays off?).  It should be out in a month or so...I'll link you when it happens.

I am working on two masks...nearly finished them last night.  They couldn't be more different.   One is a very elegant dragon; the color combination on this one is going to be striking, I can tell already.  The other is...well.  Let's just say that when you wear it, you'll be absolutely adorable and utterly without dignity.  There's no way to look fierce in a sea otter mask.

More soon!

Oh I am in a foul mood.  Not sleeping has something to do with it.  The ten inches of snow we're getting today has something to do with it.  Charlotte lost her phone last night at a varsity basketball game...that factors in there somewhere.  I'm living with two very sloppy people who are happiest when they see me cleaning up after them, apparently...that certainly adds to the fun.

One one thousand.  Two one thousand.  Three one thousand...sometimes, counting slowly helps but today, not so much.

Umm.  I did manage to finish a few masks last night/this morning.  This is the neatest of the bunch; my promised Green Man, with ancient bronze-look paint.

I tried something new...[livejournal.com profile] moko_moko 's pictures of some lovely bronze lions reminded me that real old bronze ages very dark, so I darkened up the green a lot on this one, & added a black finishing wash to the whole thing.  S'pretty.

Shiny.  I have this mask up in Etsy right now.  It'll be interesting to see how it does.

Oh...I am really not done venting just yet.  Feel free to ignore this.

Fuming, venting... )
*sigh*  It's snowing like CRAZY out there.  I need a vacation.

First of all, I want to thank everyone who read my last entry (Charlotte's essay about her day in Hiroshima)...I let Char read everyone's comments and she was really touched and grateful.   She's so insecure about her writing, so it meant a lot to her and myself as well...thank you thank you.  ^_^

Today I got pretty things in the mail.  New pendant from this artisan on Etsy.  I love it!

I used this picture of me wearing it to show you how HUGE it is...but I really love that because it makes a statement.

pretty things made with our hands... )
I used to balk at being called a "crafter" & I still do...it diminishes my art.  However, I've recently come to terms with the label "artisan" and I really like it...it feels right to me.  More than an artist, it sounds to me like who I am; a person who makes things with her hands.  I think all of us on Etsy are artisans.  It's funny that we all make our living in such an anachronistic way, & yet modern technology has allowed us to blossom & prosper in a way none of us could before.  We sit in our homes in our little studios & make pretty things with our hands for the world to love...it's quite beautiful if you think about it.  Such an honest living in these dishonest times!    Go visit Etsy and support an artisan!  ^_^

My daughter Charlotte gave me permission to post her paper about Hiroshima here.  It was her final assignment for a college level WW2 course she is taking in high school.

The kids were given a list of books about WW2 to choose from as inspiration, and were supposed to write a narrative based on the book's subject material.  Char chose a book about the atomic bombs dropped on Japan, but she was having a hard time fabricating a story about it.  I suggested that rather than create a fabrication, she should write about her real experience in Hiroshima.  She'd spent a day there while touring Japan with her People To People Student Ambassador group, and it affected her profoundly.   I thought perhaps the aftermath of the bomb was at least as relevant as the actual day of the attack, and she agreed.

Apparently her teacher agreed too.  The same teacher who, at the beginning of the semester, announced that he never gives perfect "A" grades or 100%, gave her 105% on this paper.

It's a long essay, but worth a look.  Keep in mind she is fifteen.  I have added nothing to this, and I haven't edited it either; these are her own words.

To paraphrase Elton John, Saturday night was alright.  Greg & I went to see "Frost Nixon"...it was incredible.   So timely too.  I think it would have sent me into a spiraling despair had our most recent election turned out differently.  As it was, I had to shake my head and wonder why the more things change, the more they stay the same (really, Dick Cheney was pretty much channeling Nixon, when you think about his ideology & what he said about the executive branch.  Holy crap).

One thing that I hope has gone away & never comes back; sideburns.  And wing-tip collars.  Yucko.  Oddly enough though, womens' fashion was still cute even in the 70's.  Which is why the retro look works for women.  In my opinion.  Mostly.

I have been working away like a busy bee as usual.  I spent a chunk of the day organizing my leather.  I hate to throw any materials away but sometimes you just HAVE to.  I have boxes & boxes of scraps that I'll never use because sometimes the leather is just plain lousy.  Every hide has imperfections.  So, I culled the scaps and threw out the junk and cut up boxes for hours, and now I have a nice neat empty space where a lot of junk used to be...yay!

I got my new hide today too.  So I cut out a bunch of masks and I'd work on everything except I had two glasses of wine with appetizers after the movie & I'm feeling too "winey" to trust myself with sharp objects.  Fiddle-dee-dee, tomorrow is another day.

Hope you are all having wonderful weekends, my dears.
The two cats are below, see?

A new Maneki Neko (Lucky Cat)...I shaded the orange this time instead of leaving a hard line...looks more like the porcelain "lucky cats" you see in Japan.

And here is the "aged bronze" Bast mask I was talking about making.  Notice how I did the two masks differently, even though they are both cats?  The Bast has a longer, narrower face with larger ears like a Siamese cat (Egyptian cat mummies show a cat with a body type very much like a modern Siamese).  The lucky cats all have big round cartoony-faces with cute silly ears, so I did that pattern in that vein.  Details!  These two are up in Etsy already.

Teenagers. Nature's way of reminding us adult children to be kind to our parents. )
*sigh*  Anyway.  Head hurts.  Good morning.  Going to bed now.
