OMG what a beautiful day!  First of all, a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my daughter Charlotte who is 16 today!   16 years ago, right about now (high noon) I gave birth to my one & only girl.  ^_^  Wow...time does fly!  Pictures coming of the birthday celebration (where you get to see her new cute Asian boyfriend; he looks just like anime!  She's cycling through significant others at an alarming rate lately...good for her I say).

Ahem.  Yes!  And!  I LOVE my newest masks!  FireFoxes!

Isn't that the cutest fox mask ever?  I mean, I just can't be modest about it...I love this mask!  Available on Etsy of course.

More art, and the wisdom of the Bodhisattva Path )
I'm on my second cup of coffee!  Time to head out for a bike ride with Kiba.  It's cold as heck but the sun is shining so cheerfully that I simply have to bundle up and go.    ^_^

You Are Riding Boots
You are very sophisticated. You have refined tastes, and you don't fall for cheesy trends.
You are naturally chic and stylish. You can pull together a great look in no time flat.

You don't need a lot of flash or bling in your life. You prefer the glamour of the understated.
You treasure wisdom. You are attracted to ideas and things that have stood the test of time.
I guess that's as close as I'll come to my "Harajuku boots".    God, I love those boots...

My last entry is no fun at all & that just can't stand.  I mean, it's the first day of spring, right?  And I'm the luckiest gal in the world 'cause I get to make pretty things for a living and blah blah blah...

Seriously...it's not that bad.  ^_^

Doing good deeds brings me happiness.  [livejournal.com profile] ramblinsuze  is raising funds for an AIDS charity walk and she needs your help...she's halfway to her goal.   I donated in my Dad's name 'cause I like seeing his name in print/on the screen.

Stop by her donation page and give her a high five in the form of a few bucks.  You'll be paying it forward.

Also!  THIS YOUTUBE VIDEO is the cutest thing ever.  It's from some kind of Japanese game show where people apparantly scare the living bejeebers out of their own kids (the Japanese are adorable but SO weird sometimes).  Here, some family is "under attack" from a pretty scary-looking zombie.  The kids protect their home (and Mom) with wet sponges, tape, plastic wrap, and a toy lightsabre.  One clever child writes a note "Drink this it is blood!" and tapes it over tobasco sauce she spills on the floor (hilarious).   The little guy in the red shirt though...you have to watch him.  He's cute as heck...scared to death but really brave too, & I wanted to hug the poor little thing by the end.  You MUST see.   It's not that long.   It'll make you smile.

It's cold outside but sunny too...I might just wrap myself up in a lot of clothing & go for a bike ride....hmm.

Wow.  I am being really monstrously DUMB lately.  First, I injured myself in the most humiliating way on Friday (those of you on my f-list know what I mean...).  But that wasn't good enough, so Tuesday night I went & got creatively stupid again.

Charlotte is on the Rugby team.  She's a natural, apparently, and is having a lot of fun.  Tuesday they had their first outdoor practice, & she got to wear her brand new cleats for the first time this season.  Her very expensive new Puma cleats that I just bought for her.

She got really muddy & sweaty, and when she got home she took her cleats off outside and left her dirty sweaty socks in them.  I said "do your laundry!" & pulled the socks out of her shoes which are NEW & all sweaty inside...So I did what I always do for sweaty shoes.  I reached for the Odor Eater shoe deoderant spray on the shelf.

Except I grabbed the WD40 that was sitting right next to it.  & I sprayed it into BOTH her cleats, twice, before I realized why the deoderant spray wasn't working.

So now her new cleats smell like an engine block.  I'll probably have to buy new ones...I washed 'em and everything but WD40 is nasty stuff & just does not come out of fabric.   *sigh*

If bad things come in threes, then I'm due to do something else that's incredibly dumb sometime soon.  I can only hope that A: no one gets hurt, and B: it won't be too costly.

I appear to be "On A Roll".

Happy St. Paddy's Day!  I...am not Irish so I'm not wearing any green.   Well, unless you count the green in my Batikwalla hoodie.

Spring has shown up for a few days here and it is glorious.  I went for a bike ride yesterday and I'm going again today 'cause it's like 60 degrees out there!  My "injury" is all healed up, (huzzah), and that's a good thing, because I want to do a longer trail today.  I went about 13 miles yesterday and I'm only a bit sore...I am SO out of practice!

It's funny; last November I was SO sad & blue on my last bike ride because I knew it was all ending.  It was a beautiful day just the same, with green grass and bright sunshine.  Yesterday was even cooler than my last bike ride in November was, and the grass is all flat & dead & trees are bare & ice in the river...but still I was MUCH happier.  I rejoiced at every bug I saw (even the ones that hit me in the face!).  The sun is angled higher, the air smells like spring, & things are only going to get better from now on, weather-wise.  I know I wouldn't love spring and summer as much as I do if there wasn't a winter.

Here is that hemp necklace I made, by the way...

See the teeny knots?  That hemp cord was more like hemp thread, really...
I even experimented with two different kinds of knots.  :-)  It was fun, really, & not bad for a first attempt.  In case you missed it, you can buy the glorious Beach Heart glass bead at Mary Jarvis' Etsy shop.  She is truly amazing.

I need to make another cord for Mel's pendant.   Hmm...

I'm working on a big fantasy fox mask (sort of like my very popular wolf)...I think it's going to be awesome.  I cut it out last night...it needs to be carved & shaped & just, everything.    But not today!  Today is for long-distance bike riding & possibly a little sunburn.    Life is GOOD.

Enjoy your day...I hope it's as pleasant as mine is!  ^_^

Well.   It was a lovely weekend, but due to an injury (just a leetle one!  I am okay!) I did NOT get to ride my bike.  Which sucked, because it was SO beautiful.

However, as long as I had to stay inside, I managed to catch up on some Etsy orders including this piece:
A purple and white unicorn.   I sort of borrowed the Kirin design I did for Magicarade, plus some purple & minus the kirin whiskers.  I hope she likes it...it seems elegant to me.

Charging $ for artwork... )
Anyway I hope you are all happy & healthy this week.  Spring is in the air!  How glorious is that?  ^__^

EDIT:  I just realized Sasuke is happening RIGHT NOW in Japan.  Say a prayer/ cross your fingers/ send happy thoughts to the other side of the planet for my favorite ninja fisherman.  ^_^

( Mar. 13th, 2009 12:12 pm)

I'm being way too busy and I'm doing it to myself.   Staying up until the sun comes up & then basically getting through the day by hopscotching from nap to nap.  As a result, I hardly know what day it is.  If I keep this up, I'm going to get sick (maybe?  For some reason I haven't been really sick for more than 24 hours in a long time).

I opened up a new shop on a new site.  Thought I'd try Artfire ...it has an interesting template.   Built in advertising tools & easy to navigate.  Buyers do NOT need an account there to buy (like they do on Etsy or E-bay or almost everywhere else) which I think is an awesome idea.  I like everything about it except the "make an offer" option, which I don't understand.  Does that mean someone can offer me $20 for a $100 mask?  'Cause the answer will be a big old "no".  Still confused about that a little.

Way over on the other side of the planet, Sasuke is going to happen in just 3 days!  Well...two because it's already tomorrow there.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed for my favorite ninja fisherman.  Good luck Nagano-san!  ^_^V

New masks coming soon...I'm just making so many at once that I don't know what I'll finish first or when.

But first, a little interlude I like to call "Apocalypse Panda".

"This is the end...beautiful friend.  The end..."

A friend sent him to me saying "isn't he cute??"  And I'm like "Hmm...no!  Scary!  Like Martin Sheen at the end of Apocalypse Now, getting ready to kill Kurtz."  Seriously.  Look at him.  "I like the smell of panda chow in the morning.  It smells like...victory."

Beachy goodness! )
The Facebook ad is being very very good to me.  I'm feeling grateful and a little Karmically unbalanced....must think of a good thing to do, to pass it on.  To be so busy in a time of national economic crisis is a precious thing & not to be taken lightly.

*smooch*  Love you all.  ^_^

Firstly, a mask just sent yesterday to the saintly and patient [livejournal.com profile] chibi_kaz , who ordered it like, a million years ago I think.

It is a firebird mask, based on the firebird of Russian folklore.  I got busy with little details 'cause I like it like that.

Masks & gifts from friends... )

Yay for good news!

So I saw the weather reports yesterday and they all said "Hallelujah!  Friday will be warm!" and so I asked Greg to put the bike rack back on my car in a fit of rampant optimism.

And today I woke up and HALLELUJAH!  55 DEGREES!   So I went to the garage and brought out my bike, dusted it off, filled the tires and put it on the car.  I drove to my favorite trail, willfully ignoring the way the wind was kicking my Subaru all over the road.

And yeah...it was a bad idea to even try to ride my bike.  I only went about 2 miles before I turned around.   At one point I did a little experiment and stopped pedaling, and even though I was going downhill, the wind not only stopped me but it began to blow me back UP the hill.  Yep.  Time to turn around.

But hey...I DID get out there, so there's that.  I know it was just a teaser but soon it actually will be bike-riding season, which makes me happy happy happy.  ^_^

In the meantime there's a little wooded trail not far from here, only two miles long, so I'll take myself and my bike and Kiba out there.  It's not like a real bike ride 'cause I'll have the dog, but we'll enjoy the fresh warm (relatively speaking) air and have a little bike-related fun, which is just fine by me.

Meanwhile I had my first facebook-ad-related sale, three days into the ad run.  Not bad, I think.  :-)

This entry brought to you by the letter "B".

I received a lovely little gift in the mail today; a necklace from a friend and, in fact, it matches my favorite Batikwalla hoodie quite nicely...
 See?  It matches!

I love it...it's like a charm bracelet but it's a necklace.  Glass charms, and in my favorite colors too!   So sweet...

In other news, my ad is running on Facebook.  If you see it, don't click on it!  I'm paying per click...LOL!  It's VERY complicated but my sister set the whole thing up so she made it easy for me.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it'll produce some good hits...I just figured it'd be smart to advertise outside of Etsy for a change.  Advertising inside Etsy is sort of like preaching to the choir.

It's so cold here tonight!  But by this weekend we are supposed to be up to about 50 degrees which is almost good enough for a nice bike ride...almost.    Definitely good enough for a muddy dog walk anyway.   Maybe if I wear a hat & some gloves...

Well it's Tuesday!  I feel like I deserve a cookie for surviving Monday.

Woes, lists, thoughts )

I have things I ought to be making but I am so tired.  As Scarlett O'Hara says; "Fiddle dee dee.  Tomorrow is another day."

It's been another busy weekend (aren't they always, really?).  I did something impulsive and opened a new online store at a new site.  Similar to Etsy, I think.  Anyway I thought it might be a good idea.  The place is called ShopHandMade.com...you can see my store here: Merimask Designs.  It is sad and wee, with just two items.  I'll add more no doubt, but I want to have the stock to run both this place and my Etsy site, so I'll build it slowly.  Basically it'll be a copy of my Etsy shop, just at a new venue.

I hate change.  The new store feels all odd and clunky.  Etsy is like an old friend to me; I think I could list stuff in my sleep, there.  The SHM site is...just new.  And weird.  And not familiar.  Setting it up was scary and tedious...but then, I remember Etsy was scary at first too.   Everything is scary at first, until you get used to it.

I just thought it'd be wise not to have ALL my eggs in the "Etsy basket".  What if something happens to that site?   It's good to have a contingency plan.

In other news; I've been getting a lot of requests for pictures of my masks with people in 'em.  Oddly, I do not have any of these!  I don't know why...I guess it's just something I never bothered to do.  Still, it's a good idea so what follows are a bunch of pictures of Charlotte wearing a few of my masks.  She very kindly offered to be my model,  'cause she has such a cute little face!
 Steampunk mask

more pictures... )

And there you have it!  Char deserves a hearty round of applause because it was SO COLD today and we had to take these pictures outside (of course I was outside too, so I guess I deserve applause as well).  She was a good sport though.

Back to work, here.  I have so many orders to fill & things to make!  ^_^

( Feb. 27th, 2009 01:06 pm)

I've been experimenting with golden wolf masks this week.  These "experiments" have been so insanely successful, they haven't stayed around in my Etsy shop long enough for anyone to admire them (good for me, eh?).  Fortunately I have pictures...

The first one I did was the "furry" version, which is exactly the same pattern & design I use for my regular large wolf mask.  I tried something different for the second & came up with an Asian flame pattern.  I can't really decide which one I like better, so I might just make both designs again in the future.

The color, by the way, is identical on both masks.  It's just that I took the Asian Flame Wolf's picture yesterday on a very gray washed-out day, while the first had some good true light.  For both, I painted the gold flames in bright gold on the bare leather, then did a deep brown antique stain wash over the rest of it, then drybrushed a mix of gold & copper over the brown parts, to get an antique, burnished gold effect.  Nose/eyes in black 'cause I wanted sharp contrast...though I contemplated dark brown for those too.

What do you think?  About the patterns, colors, brown or black for the noses...etc.  I'm curious.  Obviously it's a super-popular idea but I still feel like I'm experimenting.

EDIT: [info]kijjohnson's excellent short story, "26 Monkeys, Also The Abyss" has made the final ballot for the 2008 Nebula awards.   It is a beautiful story and everyone needs to read it.  I'm SO thrilled because I've loved her work forever, but it's been like a well-kept secret (how amazing she is) & finally the world is taking notice.   It couldn't happen to a more deserving author.  ^__^

You all know how much I love my fellow Etsy artisans...one of my favorites is Batikwalla.  I bought a tee shirt from her last summer that went with me to Japan & caused jaws to drop all over Tokyo.

Well, ever since I found her shop, I have been coveting her hand-batiked hoodies.  I bought the tee shirt but what I really wanted was the hoodie.
This week I finally got one!

It arrived yesterday and I haven't taken it off yet.

Beautiful! )Check out her shop:  Batikwalla on Etsy...she's always open to custom work.

Please support your North American Artisans!  ^_^

Mardi Gras '09 was a HOOT.
Me and Rose getting goofy with the Mardi Gras beads...

incriminating pictures of drunken mayhem )
SO much fun!  And there are big plans to do it all again next year, too!  I have a whole year to come up with something FABULOUS.  ;-)

Well, this will be my fifth attempt at making an entry on LJ today...for some reason the LiveJournal cut option is not working.  :-/    Whatever...you still need to hear my news!  I'm really sorry this is so long (I apologize!)...I did my best to make it neat but, LJ is obviously broken today.

This morning I was greeted with something simply lovely; an e-mail from my favorite ninja fisherman!  I sent him this dragon mask (you can read all about it here) and a letter, and he wrote back with these two pictures attached:

So now apparently he has a small collection of my art on his boat (yes he really is a fishing boat captain), which I think is really adorable.   The gold dragon keychain is actually for his wife (I thought it'd be polite to send her something too), so now they have a matched pair of his-n-hers dragons.  Everybody say "aww".    ^__^

I want to include the two letters that were written...one from me to him (which is LONG) and the one he sent back.  Unfortunately, like I said, LJ is not cooperating with cuts.   I really REALLY tried.  Sorry.  :-/
Anyway, you really probably need to see them both 'cause they're beautiful.

My letter to Nagano-san:

Dear Nagano-san,

While it was my initial intention to send this gift to you as a gift of gratitude, it has come to my attention that you are recently married.  Congratulations!  (banzai!!)  Please accept my warmest wishes for a long happy life with your new bride.  The smaller package is a gift for your wife...I do hope she likes it, as I made it especially for her.  I am very happy for you both!

It has been an auspicious year for both of us.  You may remember me from Sasuke 21 last September...I was the American artist introduced to you in front of far too many cameras.   When Higuchi-san heard the story of how you inspired me to health, he graciously invited me to see Sasuke being filmed in person!   I must apologize for the cameras...I was at the mercy of the wishes of TBS (Tokyo Broadcasting System) and G4TV, and of course I was Higuchi-san's guest so I wanted to comply with his wishes.  Yet, I could tell that the timing was bad because Yamamoto Shingo was about to begin his run, and I was so embarrassed to be distracting you at that time!  Please forgive me.

Still, meeting you in person and thanking you was the end of an incredible journey for me, or so I thought at the time.  Terrible health issues had clipped my wings all winter, but when a friend shared a video of you conquering the Sasuke course in 2006, it changed everything for me.  That is what I wished to thank you for.

What I didn't know at the time was that my journey had only just begun.  Shortly after arriving home from seeing Sasuke 21 (an incredible, wonderful experience I will never forget) I was contacted by Higuchi-san again.  He asked me to help him with his next "Muscle Musical" show; Magicarade.  I was asked to design almost fifty masks for the stage show, that appeared in Shibuya from October through the middle of December.

I had very little time to create these masks.  I remember that I invoked two mantras to help me through the task; I reminded myself of the Japanese concept "Doryoku", and whenever I was tired or discouraged I told myself to think "What would Nagano-san expect of me?"  It helped me to reach an incredible goal.

In less than three weeks, I had finished all the masks for the show.  Not only did I finish two weeks ahead of schedule; I also did some of the best artwork I have ever done in my life.

When I was brought back to Japan in October of 2008, in preparation for the opening of Magicarade, it felt like the final piece of a puzzle falling into place.  As I stood in front of the Muscle Theater in Shibuya and looked up at the poster for the show, with one of my dragon masks beautifully featured on it, I felt probably the same emotions you felt from the top of the final tower in Sasuke 2006.  It was my kanzenseiha (完全制覇).

So now, I am sending you this mask.  It is the most beautiful thing I could manage to make for you...I do hope you like it.  I was so pleased to learn that you liked the dragon keychain I made for you so much that you displayed it on your boat.  Of all the many thousands of things I have made for thousands of people, and of all the thousands of places that my work have ended up, the thought of that tiny blue dragon hanging on your ship somewhere off the coast of Southern Japan makes me happiest of all.

As I said to you when I met you; I do not really know you and you do not really know me, and yet, because of you and your good example, my life has changed in a hundred little ways.  I learned some important lessons from you.  I learned to keep trying with a smile on my face, even when I don't succeed.  I learned that the journey and the way we pursue it is more important than the goal, sometimes.  I learned to reach out and say thank you, even to strangers!, because it is important to let people know when they have been beneficial in your life.

When I tried to thank you at Sasuke 21, even as the translator told you that I felt my life had changed because of the inspiration you provided,  you shook your head and said "No no...I'm just an ordinary person".  When I said I was an ordinary person too, you looked at me like you didn't believe me; ordinary people don't travel across the globe as guests of entertainment moguls, or make beautiful art, do they?

Maybe the truth is, no one is ordinary.  Maybe the truth is, we all have it inside us to be better than we think we are, and to inspire.  Even if it's by competing in an obstacle course, or making something beautiful, or making a new friend, or being a good mother, or reaching out in little ways that make the world a kinder place for someone...even just for a minute.  You never know when you're being extraordinary.

So Nagano san, I am telling you in my own way that we are all extraordinary, and that is why you deserve this mask.  I know how humble you are, and I am sure that you think it is too much.  I want to assure you, however, that if I made you a hundred such masks, it would never begin to repay the debt of gratitude I owe you.  When I use "naikan" (a Japanese reflection on gratitude) I feel compelled to let you know that what you do profoundly and positively affects people all over the world, and my only way of thanking you for this is though my art.

Please accept this humble gift in that spirit.  I am calling this mask "The Dragon of Strength and Gratitude"  My most sincere wish is that when you see it, you will perhaps think of the American artist who had a chance to see her dreams come true, and you will remember the part you played in that.

Thank you very much, and best wishes always!

Andrea Masse-Tognetti

PS...I think you should know this.  When I was at Sasuke, I spent most of the day with Henry Cejudo...he was the American who won the gold medal in Wrestling, at the Beijing Olympics last summer.  He was invited to participate in Sasuke at the last minute, and had never heard of it before.  I told him many stories about Sasuke, and especially about you.  Even after he fell at the Half-Pipe (he is a wrestler and when he came upon the rope so suddenly, it surprised him and he tried to hug it in his arms rather than grasp it properly with his hands!), yet he remained late into the night to see the rest of the competition.  You fought so bravely to the end; we were all sure you would make it even as you fell.  After, Henry came up to me with tears in his eyes.  He said to me "Your hero Nagano...he should have one of these.  He deserves it."...and he pulled his beautiful gold Olympic medal out of his shirt.

My friend Carol kindly translated it...she's a saint for translating such a long letter.  She also translated his response:

お久しぶりです。
お祝いの言葉、ありがとうございます。
あなたの事は、覚えているし、竜も飾っています。

It's been quite a while since we had contact. (It really has a "Long time no see!" kind of meaning)
Thank you for your congratulory message.
I do remember you and I still have the dragon as a decoration.
Thank you very much for the new dragon. It is truly remarkable.

In Japan, on March 16, Sasuke 22 will be held.
I hope to be able to inspire many people by giving my best effort.

Your journey has still not ended yet. Every day is the middle of a journey, and if someone keeps trying new challenges, his/her life will be enriched.

Thank you again for the dragon.
Makoto Nagano

I think my favorite part is when he says my journey has not ended yet, because I strongly feel that to be true.   I have a third Daruma with one eye painted, winking at me from my bookshelf, reminding me that there are still dreams and goals to reach for.  With me, nothing is ever "finished".  The book is still open.  I'm still writing in it.  There are still so many blank pages to be filled.

Anyway, it's wonderful that my gift and letter were received in the spirit in which they were given.   ^_^  A beautiful thing to know on this very lovely Mardi Gras day.

*smooch*  Love you all!

PS...Suze...your reply to my first attempt was lost because I had to delete (and delete, and delete) the whole mess.  *hugs*  Sorry!  Please re-post 'cause you know I always love hearing from you!
